Taimen CLX Fly Rod

The Taimen CLX grew from a straightforward question: what should a classic fly rod feel like today? Medium action was long regarded as the traditional benchmark, but advances in graphite blanks have changed both rod performance and anglers’ expectations. When developing the CLX, we placed its action towards the gentler end of the fast spectrum. The result combines the lively response of a modern fly rod with a smooth, legible loading pattern that is easy to follow through the cast.

The heart of the CLX is the balance between line speed and presentation control. The blank releases energy promptly and drives the fly line with authority, while its measured flex keeps the casting stroke composed and predictable. It helps the angler establish a natural rhythm without demanding a hurried delivery. This character will appeal to those who enjoy a fast action but also want to feel the blank load, control the loop and place the fly with confidence.

Construction and series character

CLX blanks are made from high-modulus Japanese graphite. This material enabled us to combine rapid recovery with the balanced deflection on which the whole family is based. The models share the same underlying way of working, so moving within the range preserves the recognisable CLX character. In the hand it remains lively, balanced and focused on deliberate control of the fly line.

The fittings follow the same principle of functional simplicity. The reel seat is machined from a single piece of aluminium, while the handle is made from high-quality cork. These are materials with a strong place in traditional fly-rod construction, brought together here around a modern graphite blank. The result is a coherent specification in which each component supports secure, direct contact between angler and tackle.

Each rod is supplied in a Cordura-covered tube. Internal dividers keep the rod sections separate during storage and travel, helping to protect the blank and its finish. It is a practical complement to a series intended for regular fishing, movement along the water and safe transport between trips.

CLX is our interpretation of a modern classic: quick to respond yet harmonious in the way it bends, able to create high line speed while retaining the control required for considered fly presentation. That balance, more than any isolated specification, is what defines the series.
