Sage Spectrum Max Fly Reel
The Sage Spectrum Max is a family of fly reels developed for demanding fishing where rapid line retrieval, accessible drag adjustment and additional control from the palm are important. It was designed for heavier-duty outfits used in both fresh and salt water. Every complete reel in the family combines a large-arbour spool with Sage’s sealed SCS disc drag.
The frame and spool are precision-machined from 6061-T6 aluminium that has been cold forged and tempered before machining. A hard-anodised finish provides surface protection and resistance to corrosion. Sage also specified a rigid frame-to-spool connection, an ergonomic handle and a widened spool rim that is easy to reach when extra braking pressure is applied by hand during a fight.
Construction and series character
The large, ventilated arbour has a concave profile and an open, ported structure. Its broad core supports fast line pick-up and helps reduce tight line coiling after storage. A quick-change mechanism allows the spool to be removed and refitted without a lengthy procedure. Retrieve can be converted between left- and right-hand operation, allowing the reel to be adapted to the angler’s preferred winding hand.
The SCS drag uses carbon discs enclosed within a system sealed against water, sand, grit and salt. Its One Revolution control covers the adjustment range within a single turn. A numbered scale and 40 positive detents make small changes easy to judge, allow a previous setting to be found again and provide a quick transition between light running tension and firmer fighting pressure. The widened palming rim remains readily accessible whenever direct manual control is required.
