Sage Spectrum Fly Reel
Sage Spectrum is a fully machined fly-reel family developed from the design approach of the earlier 4200 series. It combines a large-arbor spool with Sage’s sealed SCS disc drag, suiting conventional fly-fishing outfits where quick recovery of slack and predictable control of outgoing line are important. Operation is straightforward, and the retrieve can be configured for either the left or right hand.
The reel is machined from 6061-T6 aluminium. Its cold-forged and tempered material provides the frame and spool with useful rigidity without requiring a bulky structure. Hard anodising protects the aluminium surfaces against corrosion and everyday surface damage. The ergonomic handle is likewise machined and anodised aluminium, giving the angler a firm winding point while maintaining a consistent construction throughout the reel.
Construction and series character
The broad core of the large-arbor spool retrieves more line with each turn of the handle. As the effective winding diameter changes less markedly while line leaves the spool, drag resistance remains more consistent over a sustained run. The concave arbor profile adds structural support while retaining practical room for fly line and backing. This geometry also helps reduce the tight coils that can develop when line remains stored on a reel.
Sage’s SCS disc drag uses carbon friction surfaces and is sealed against water, sand, grit and salt. It is designed for smooth engagement and consistent pressure as line is taken from the spool. The drag knob covers its adjustment range within one revolution, while numbered positions and positive detents make a chosen setting easy to identify and revisit. Retrieve conversion requires no replacement parts, allowing the same reel to be arranged for left- or right-hand winding.
- Construction: fully machined, cold-forged and tempered 6061-T6 aluminium.
- Finish: hard-anodised surfaces with a machined and anodised aluminium handle.
- Spool: large, concave arbor for rapid line recovery and more consistent drag behaviour.
- Drag: sealed SCS carbon disc system with a one-revolution adjustment knob.
- Handling: numbered, detented drag positions and reversible retrieve direction.
