Hareline Ostrich Herl
Hareline Ostrich Herl consists of selected ostrich feathers supplied as loose fly-tying material. The herl consists of individual soft fibres that can be wrapped, placed in a dubbing loop or tied in as separate sections. Use it to build full bodies, collars and streamer details, as well as salmon flies where soft fibres provide a distinct, mobile accent. The feathers can be used whole or stripped for the required number of fibres. The package measures 35 × 7.5 cm.
Construction and use
Soft ostrich fibres create a full, textured profile with relatively few wraps. Wrap the herl directly around the hook shank, place it in a loop or secure it as short sections. A looser arrangement preserves the material’s volume, so match the amount of fibre to the available space and intended fly profile. Align the tips before tying and secure the material with a few controlled thread wraps.
